Private Island Life
A secluded isle with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters seems to offer the ultimate in luxury—and for the lucky few, that’s true. But there are some key things to consider before you take the plunge.
Whether it’s a remote Caribbean atoll or a chilly northern rock, owning an island can be a costly and challenging venture. It requires a lot of planning and coordination, from ensuring reliable delivery of materials to finding help to carry out maintenance. Plus, many islands are ecologically sensitive locations with a variety of natural species to protect and preserve. And that’s not the only challenge. There are also taxes, fees and regulations to comply with.
But that’s not to say it’s impossible to own a private island. Thanks to improved technology and a shift in luxury tastes, secluded retreats are becoming more affordable. And it’s not just the super-rich who are interested. “We’re seeing people who would never have thought of buying an island before now considering it,” says Chris Krolow, host of the HGTV show Island Hunters and chief executive officer of the private-island company Private Islands Inc. “They’re thinking that it might be the lifeline they’re looking for until things change.”
Krolow says his company is seeing inquiries about private islands double every week since March, and those interested in buying one often come from countries with a high number of islands. He cites the farthest-flung archipelagoes in the world as particularly hot spots. The most desirable islands are the ones that feel remote, but not completely cut off—which means they have a marina, water sports and restaurants nearby.
And if you’re willing to put in the work, a private island can be a great place to live. It’s a unique lifestyle that offers the opportunity to escape from a hectic and stressful everyday life and enjoy a more fulfilling existence in the outdoors with friends, family and loved ones. It’s a chance to be truly at peace with nature—and sometimes even yourself.
But the drawbacks of an isolated paradise can be just as challenging as the benefits. The seclusion can be isolating, especially if the nearest mainland is miles away. And it’s not always easy to get the items you need or to find the right help for maintenance. And if you do end up having to leave, getting back can be a long process that may require a seaplane or helicopter.
But there are ways to overcome these obstacles. For instance, some companies offer to handle everything from construction to staffing and supply management, so you can be as self-sufficient as possible while enjoying your private oasis. And if you’re prepared to do your homework, it’s possible to make your dream of island living a reality for much less than you might think. For more information, please contact me.
