Off-Grid Power For Your Private Island Escape

The solitude and dreamy isolation that private islands offer is a major part of their appeal, but when connecting to a power grid is too expensive or impossible, how can you keep your luxury island running? Many island owners choose to use solar, wind or generator power with backup batteries. In some cases, the entire island is powered by a single renewable energy source that can be fed into a large battery bank.

Typically, solar energy systems on private islands consist of flat panels that convert a percentage (5-15%) of the sun’s rays into electricity. The excess electricity can then be stored in a large battery, which can provide energy for several days, even without sunlight. A standard home solar system usually has enough capacity to power a typical house, though larger systems are available.

A battery that can “island” or operate independently of the main power supply is also needed for a true off-grid system. These batteries can be used for daily consumption as well, but they are best suited for use as a backup when the solar panel system is not producing electricity.

Most private islands that have a renewable energy system will also have a diesel or gas generator as a back-up to provide power in the event of a storm or other emergency. These generators can be run on fuel that is shipped in containers or via airplanes and helicopters. Some islands rely solely on these generators for all of their electricity, while others have a combination of renewable and non-renewable sources.

If an island is close to a larger mainland or other smaller islands, undersea cables can be connected to the main power grid. This is how most of the world’s larger cities are supplied with electricity, and many of the smallest islands connect to the main power grid through this method as well.

Some islanders also build their own power stations, which can be powered by wind turbines, solar and diesel generators or a combination of these technologies. The power station’s output is then fed into a step down transformer, where the electricity can be distributed to various loads on the island.

This beautiful, off-grid private island escape is the perfect blend of luxury and sustainability. Surrounded by crystal clear waters and lush tropical vegetation, this island is just a short 20 minute boat ride from the resort town of Bocas Del Toro.
