Buying a Private Island

Buying a private island is no longer the exclusive domain of billionaires and celebrities. Even middle-class families are looking to get away from it all by purchasing a secluded oasis in the tropics where they can kick back and relax. These island paradises range from pristine secluded havens ideal for a modern day Robinson Crusoe to eco-friendly luxury resorts that provide the ultimate in both privacy and seclusion.

The secluded sands of the Caribbean and the Pacific are still popular for those wanting to enjoy a relaxed beach vacation, but many island hunters are now extending their search to colder, more remote areas of the world. According to Jacques Menahem, founder of French Polynesia Sotheby’s International Realty, he normally receives two to three inquiries a week from people looking for a private island. But since March, that number has climbed to as many as 10 enquiries a day. “People are really hungry for a very, very remote area,” he says.

One option is Canada where, despite the chilly temperatures, no-frills islands priced as low as $100,000 are selling very well. “People are craving the sense of security and control that comes with owning an island,” he says. He cites Half Island off the coast of Nova Scotia as an example, which could be turned into a high-security resort and where there are deer and bald eagles to spot.

Another hot spot is Belize where a growing number of Americans and Canadians are snapping up pristine tropical islands, some of which have their own golf course, spa, and gourmet restaurant. It’s a great place for investors to buy as prices are much lower than in the Caribbean and South Pacific.

There are also plenty of US islands on the market, with Florida in particular being a top destination for island buyers. Terra’s Key, a 15.5-acre island in Islamorada, has a 2,000-foot driveway and offers panoramic open water views with the sights of Alligator Reef Light.

In addition to being a luxurious retreat, private islands can be used as a base for fishing or diving trips and are perfect for hosting weddings, birthday parties and other events. Most of the islands on our list come with staff to take care of any catering or other needs that may be required.
