Cruise Line Private Island Excursion Ideas

The term Private Island Excursion may sound a bit of an oversell for cruise line-owned islands that feature a few cookie-cutter staples: barbecue buffet lunches, beach equipment rentals, shopping areas and kiddie play zones. But even if cruise lines’ private destinations have plenty of similarities, each offers unique experiences that reflect its individual character and the needs of its guests.

Most cruise line private islands are geared toward families, with amenities like water slides, splash parks and inflatables. But some, like Norwegian Cruise Line’s Harvest Caye in Belize, have a more laid-back feel and offer activities like kayaking, snorkeling and after-dark stargazing. The new private island, which is located a few miles offshore from Placencia, also has a lagoon pool with lounge chairs and private cabanas, as well as shops that sell local wares.

A day at Castaway Cay, Disney’s Bahamas private island, can be spent on a picture-perfect beach, snorkeling vivid reefs teeming with sea life or exploring the Mayan ruins that frame this picturesque destination. A range of shore excursions is available, from a zip line to a helicopter tour. But a favorite option is parasailing, which can send you soaring over the island for up to 7 minutes.

If you’re looking for a more intimate experience, a visit to Roatan’s Little French Key beach resort is a popular day-pass excursion that takes you away from the crowds. Round-trip water shuttles from the cruise terminal in Coxen Hole include use of all Little French Key facilities, including lounge chairs, hammocks and floats. Lunch and beverages are included.

MSC Cruises gave its Ocean Cay Marine Reserve a makeover following the ship’s purchase of the island in 2016, and this Bahamian destination now includes two family-friendly beaches, as well as an adults-only zone that features a pool and more private cabanas. The cruise line’s plan is to allow ships to dock late into the night on their final day at Ocean Cay, enabling evening activities.

This secluded private island, owned by Holland America Line, is one of the largest in the Caribbean and provides an ideal spot to soak up the sun. The 2-acre retreat, which is set on the island of Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, has a pristine beach that’s ideal for relaxing and taking in the crystal-clear water. Guests can rent cabanas, which come with a variety of amenities and some have their own plunge pools. There’s also a waterfront restaurant and bars, and an on-shore shop selling souvenirs. For a more luxurious touch, you can upgrade to an upscale VIP option that comes with a butler and other extras.
